As Raleigh wedding planners that love the charm of Durham, we so enjoyed providing full-service planning and design for an adorable couple who wanted their fall wedding in downtown Durham. Suzy and Tyler’s wedding day was filled with personality Green was the cornerstone of the design. We layered various tones and textures to create something unique for the couple. This wasn’t your average green and white wedding. We’d call it green green!

Choosing The Cookery Durham as their venue

The couple met in Durham and started their love story there. So finding a venue in Durham was important to them! We ultimately landed on hosting their wedding at The Cookery in Durham as it was convenience to all the downtown hotels and accessible for a fun after party following the event.

While the couple loved the industrial style of the venue. They also wanted to add a little bit more color and elegance. We softened the space with green taffeta draping. The draping served multiple purposes – both functional and aesthetic. This wedding was an intimate size. Therefore, the ceremony and reception happened in the same space. The draping not only added warmth and movement to the industrial details, but also served as a great divider to create two rooms out of one.

The Wedding at The Cookery Durham

The ceremony was set against the windows on the far end of the ballroom in the Cookery Durham. We used draping to soften the light a little bit, and layered sheer curtains to create a trendy backdrop for the couple. Their ceremony florals mimicked natural greenery that may be organically growing in an industrial space – like jasmine or english ivy on the streets of an old cobblestone historic district. As a result, the florals felt like they were perfectly woven into the historic district of Downtown Durham.

Cocktail hour added a playful touch to the day. Suzy and Tyler had custom doodles of themselves and their pets for guests to take photos with. This wedding was also kid-friendly. So we added some fun outdoor games for the kiddos to be entertained while the adult guests imbibed on the premier cocktails crafted in-house at The Cookery Durham. While the catering team passed around appetizers, guests could also enjoy a snack that came from the couple’s new hometown – Birmingham Alabama. The peanuts and the seating chart inspired incorporated baseball cards. This provided the perfect combination of honoring both Durham and Birmingham as cities that were special to the couple.

For the reception, fun linens from BBJ La Tavola added even more personality. We loved the embroidered detail and greenery accents that were woven throughout the space. For florals, we drew inspiration from ikebana-style design, incorporating white dahlias and soft greenery arranged with intentional form and space.

HL catering served dinner, and guests enjoyed an intimate, elevated experience surrounded by candlelight. This Durham wedding was the perfect example of how thoughtful design and planning can transform an industrial space into something warm, creative, and unforgettable.
